Dominance of Line
The X-ray style of painting found in the Aboriginal rock art of Arnhem Land, Australia, employs an intricate build up of closely hatched lines to describe details of of the subjects depicted.
These Barramundi fish are under painted with a white pigment, outlined in a dark red, then broken down into smaller detailed shapes which are painstakingly hatched with fine dark lines.

The rock art galleries are often densely layered, being built up over thousands of years with intricate, superimposed images. The images are closely woven into tribal stories and customs giving the galleries a richness way beyond just their visual appeal.
