TALL TALES

Part of the fascination of a foreign country is the fact that many of the every day incidents, customs and beliefs don't seem to make a lot of sense. A travel guide and phrase book will help unravel some of the mysteries but occasionally, an ill-informed interpretation produces a much better story.

The work in this exhibition is derived mainly from incidents and experiences in Southern Italy and Sicily. The ancient culture, passionate people, and underworld shadows that pervade daily life, conjure up a wealth of images. To seek out the truth and try and explain these mysteries is fine for anthropologists and historians, but for me, the unfilled gaps are the source of much taller tales.
