PHYSICAL TEXTURE

In this small demonstration painting
you can see the techniques
employed to take advantage of
physical texture.
PVA glue was diluted slightly and
used to stick patches of Japanese
rice paper to the surface.
The bleeding paint above the door
and in the window show the behaviour
of watercolour on the rice paper.
Tearing the rice paper gives an
organic, feathered edge more suited
to this subject. Gesso was brushed
roughly onto the foreground to break
up the surface of the paper before
applying a watercolour wash.
