WATERCOLOR PALETTE

Studio Palette

I prefer a palette with a fair amount of room for mixing and a sloping side on the paint wells. This allows dirty paint to run to the bottom of the well keeping the fresh paint reasonably clean. Some people like to empty an entire tube of paint into each of the wells. I prefer to squeeze out enough for the painting I'm working on - fresh paint is much nicer to use.
Avoid letting Gouache invade the watercolor mixing area of your palette. Limit the gouache to a couple of unused wells or use an old white china plate or sushi tray to keep your watercolor palette free of gouache

Traveling Palette

For traveling a small folding plastic or enamel palette is more convenient than a large studio palette. Paintings tend to be smaller when working on location so a large mixing area is less important.

Disposable Palette

For Gouach and acrylic paint I use a rectangle of clear, thick plastic placed over a sheet of white paper. As the paint builds up and dries on the plastic it is replaced with a fresh piece.

Not the healthiest looking plastic palette.  I find the more I use a palette the less I like to wash it out. Hiding somewhere there always seems to be just the right mixture of neutral sludge!
