This is one of the most beautiful parts of the world to paint, and with excellent food wine and company these tours are always inspiring and enjoyable

TECHNIQUE

Here is a new technique I have been experimenting with recently. Instead of using masking fluid and having to deal with hard, sharp lines after removal, I have been using thick white gouache as a masking medium. The results are much softer and more subtle.

ON THE EASEL

I have been having a great time over the past few weeks coaxing the early morning atmosphere of a small Italian village out of a huge sheet of Arches paper (1200x1200 or 4' square)
I have used watercolour, ink, acrylic, gouache and gesso plus several large sheets of Japanese rice paper to build this painting up to the stage it is at now

TASMANIA
From the 4th - 15th January, our guide, Claudio, eight keen painters and myself had a fantastic time wandering all over the state of Tasmania.

The Island being so condensed and interesting meant that travel was leisurely and enjoyable.

  Ross Village

We painted in some wonderful places.  Beside the old stone bridge at Richmond, in the quaint little village of Ross, by the beautiful, clear water of Coles Bay on the Freysnet Peninsular.

Painting at Richmond

We also had the opportunity to take plenty of photographs. One of the most spectacular places was Hells Gates, the treterous enterance to Macquarie Harbour on the west coast. Here we encountered the only bad weather on the trip, but the mist and wind driven rain added such an atmosphere to the landscape, we considered ourselves lucky

Hells Gate

Claudio and I are planning another trip to Tasmania in 2004 If you are interested send me an email  and I will let you know the details so far
