MORNING SUN
© JOHN LOVETT 1997

This painting of an old stone cottage on the edge of the desert in South Australia was done as an experiment using different media. Japanese rice paper was glued in random patches from the dark region under the verandah down under the fence posts to the foreground. The grass in the foreground and the stone wall were worked over with Gesso to change the paper texture before water colour washes were applied. The colour scheme was kept very simple. Predominantly warm ochres and Burnt Sienna relieved by the Cobalt sky and small amount of Ultramarine splashed into the foreground. The shadow under the roof line looses intensity as it moves to the right. This stops the viewers eye running out that side of the painting. The cool Grey wash in the right hand side of the roof also helps the eye return to the centre of interest.
